I'm finally ready to call attention to my photo blog - Riceminers.com. It's been up for a few weeks now but I wasn't quite comfortable giving out the link while it was still incomplete. Even now it still isn't 100 percent done, but you can head on over and check it out anyway. It's a hobby that I'm hoping to improve on. Many of the photos have already been posted here in the past. Leave some comments, and if you want a print, just click details and you can order one through Google Checkout. Keep an eye out more features and photos in the future.

Follow me on Twitter

After resisting the micro-blogging hype for all this time without any good reason, I finally gave in and created an account with Twitter. If you're signed up, you should follow me: @seanhenri. If not, you should head on over to Twitter.com and sign up. It's both addictive and fun.
One thing that I really like about Twitter is that I can post updates via Google Talk or through text messages. This is great for all of these bottled-up ridiculous thoughts I'm always having. And I've gotten it synced up so it automatically changes my Facebook status.
Another thing I'm looking into doing is setting up a feed for all of my social network activity on the sidebar, much like what you see in your mini-news feed on Facebook. So, keep an eye for that in the near future. It'll be just one more way you can e-stalk me. I apologize for being such a nerd.

April Takes Over

I thought I'd stop in and update everyone with what I've been up to. I realize it's been a while since I posted, and I definitely don't want this blog to be dormant.
Here's some highlights from the past several weeks:
- I won the trip to Martinique. I have no idea when I'm going yet, but it will be sometime between now and the end of November. Thank you to everyone who voted!
- The Guggenheim Museum - It's been the last big museum in New York that I had yet to visit, and I changed that a few weekends ago when I went there with Jenn and Mindy. I think I more impressed with the architecture than I was with the artwork.
- Flea Market - Another Jenndy Henri adventure. We took a day long road trip around the northwest corner of Connecticut stopping at the Elephants Trunk country flea market in New Milford, a small diner in the middle of nowhere, and then Kent Falls. It's worthwhile to just get in the car and drive with only a lose agenda. Try it.
- Little Italy - This past Saturday I ate at this great restaurant on Mulberry Street called Da Genarro. Check it out if you're in the city looking for a nice place for some outdoor dining.
- Kayaking - I finally busted out the kayak for the first time this year. Felt great. Hopefully I'll be picking up a second one in the near future so my friends can join me. It'll be known as the "frieyack".
- Photo Blog - It's out there, but I don't want to announce it yet. It's not quite done. You'll have to forgive the ridiculous name I've given it. I already owned the domain and didn't want to see it go to waste. The albums I have in the photo section of this website are about to go. Sorry friends, but you'll have to turn to Facebook if you want to see all the daily snapshots now on.
Here's a few pics from the other week:

So many ideas

On top of the previously mentioned idea that I have about a Connecticut related blog, two other projects you may see coming shortly are a photo blog (something I've played around with in the past), and a blog focusing on music /The Beatles. More details to come.
Speaking of photos.. I've been experimenting with some over-saturation on the colors in some shots. I'm trying to give them somewhat of a vintage feel. A friend recently commented that it makes the photo almost look like a painting. Below are two that I took over the weekend. Any thoughts?

Try something new

It's always nice to get out and try something new instead of following the same old routine. I did a bit of that on Saturday and Sunday. My friend Mindy and I went into New Haven to check out the Yale Art Gallery. I was a bit surprised by the amount of famous artworks featured their permanent collection. I spent years working directly across the street and I never had any clue they were there. The gallery is free to the public and absolutely worth your time if you've never been there.
Aside from the gallery, we met up with our friend Kam for some lunch at the Educated Burgher, drove up to East Rock, and ventured down to the coastline to check out Fort Nathan Hale.
The day's adventures got me thinking. There are so many things to do around Connecticut that many people my age never seem to think of doing. I wonder if maybe they simply don't know about them. I frequently hear complaints that "Connecticut sucks" or have people tell me they can't go out because they're low on money. Well aside from my lunch and gas, everything I did on Saturday was free. It doesn't cost a penny to go to a park or the beach. Museums and galleries rarely charge for admission and if they do it's a few dollars at the most. There's so many things to do on a weekend aside from just going to a bar every Friday night at 10.
We live in a great state. It's filled with cultural, historical, and recreational attractions. Its proximity to New York, Massachussets and Rhode Island make it even better. There's tons of great places to see and things to do that are all within a day's drive. So an idea I have is to start up a new blog that focuses on these sort of things. I have a few co-authors lined up, so it may be something we get going soon. The blog will feature strictly localized content. It's just an idea now, but I see this coming together in the near future. It needs a name. Any thoughts?

Essential Tools for the Web

Lately I've been advocating that my friends sign up for the many free services and tools that Google offers. In case you haven't heard this from me yet, here's a list of things that should try out NOW:
- Gmail - With over 6 gigs of storage you'll never delete an email again. It's fast, clean, and easy to use. AIM is built right into it. It allows you to send & receive mail from your old email accounts preventing you from having to tell everyone about your new address. I have no doubt that it's the best email service out there.
- Google Talk - Google's instant messaging client. Automatically displays all your contacts and notifies you when you have a new email. The nice thing about it is all of your conversations are logged into your gmail account, so if you're trying to remember an address or a bit of information that somebody mentioned to you once, you can just review the convo in your email. It also allows you to easily call your contact and send voicemails. It's quicker and easier to use than AIM. I honestly wish everyone would just switch over.
- Google Reader - An incredible way to take every website you'll ever want to visit and put it all in one place. As soon as a website that you like (such as seanhenri.com) posts something new, you're instantly notified in google reader. No more need to skip from website to website to see what's new. It's like an Inbox for the web. If you have no idea what I'm taking about, I'd recommend checking out my post about RSS feeds. Should explain things a bit. The really cool thing about google reader is that you can share interesting content with your friends almost instantly. Sharing is caring. To see what I've shared, click here. It's addictive. You'll see.
- Google Calendar - Self explanatory. Another great way to share and collaborate.
- Google Docs - Come on!
- Google Maps - Don't use MapQuest.
- Google Profiles - It's like a business card for everything you do within google. Use it to identify yourself when leaving business reviews in Google Maps, or for all the content you'll be sharing with your contacts in Google Reader.
There's more, but try these out first. In my opinion these are the essentials for anyone daring to call themselves a web-savvy individual. Test them out and you'll be hooked. Let me know what you think, and don't hesitate to let me know if you have more to add to the list.

Jenn has begun selling handmade vinyl record memorabilia clocks at the Chef's Table in Fairfield, CT. She plans on setting up an online store in the near future, but in the meantime if you're interested in buying one you should head over to her website and send her an email or stop in at the Chef's Table and demand one pronto. Prices range from $15 to $25 and custom versions are available by request.

The best part of waking up?

I can say with confidence that I'm now addicted to coffee. It's become a part of my daily routine. A cup or two in the morning, then usually another from Starbucks in the late afternoon. I would say it's the caffeine that I'm addicted to, but I feel like I can easily go without a red bull or a can of coke. Maybe I'm wrong, but it feels like there's something more to a cup of coffee then a quick shot of energy. I just can't pin down exactly what it is. Maybe it's the social aspect? Maybe there's more?
I feel better when I've had my morning cup of coffee. I feel worse when I have a Red Bull or Monster energy drink. With coffee I feel that I'm more focused and productive. That's just not the case with the energy drinks.
I've read plenty about the benefits of drinking coffee. Apparently it's the top source of antioxidants in American's diets. It can potentially help prevent Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, colon cancer and diabetes.
Then again it also puts you at a higher risk for heart disease. If you drink too much, the caffeine can temporarily stiffen your arterial walls. That's scary stuff.
So what's your take? Say I drink 3 cups of coffee a day - two in the morning, one in the afternoon. Do the pros of coffee outweigh the cons? Or am I just making my heart a ticking time bomb?

Thanks to everyone who voted for my story in the Color Me Martinique contest! I'm really impressed with all of the help I received. Everyone really pulled through on this one and helped me gather an incredible amount of votes. Still no official word on who the winners are yet but at this point it's looking pretty good. The big announcement comes Monday. Good luck to all of you. Remember... you might have a vacation coming your way!
